GIRLS SWIMMING WINS WPIAL TITLE; Boys Finish Sixth

The Shady Side Academy girls swimming team won its fourth straight WPIAL team title, dominating the 2017-2018 WPIAL Class AA Championships at the University of Pittsburgh's Trees Pool on March 1-2, 2018. The SSA girls won gold medals in three events and earned 11 other medals for top eight finishes, finishing with 287 team points, or 21 points ahead of second-place Indiana. The SSA boys team placed sixth overall with 137 team points, winning a gold medal on one event and earning three other medals for top eight finishes.

The girls gold medalists were: senior Lindsey Grune in the 200 IM with a time of 2:08.90; the 200 freestyle medley team of seniors Sasha Arefyev, Heather Grune and Lindsey Grune and sophomore Maya Groff with a time of 1:39.54; and the 400 freestyle relay team of seniors Meredith Cumminings, Arefyev, Heather Grune and Lauer with a time of 3:36.86.

2nd place in 200 medley relay: Later, Groff, Cummings, L. Grune - 1:48.49
2nd place in 100 freestyle: Cummings and L. Grune - 53.02 (tie)
2nd place in 500 freestyle: Arefyev - 5:14.06
3rd place in 100 butterfly: Cummings - 58.67
4th place in 200 freestyle: Arefyev - 1:58.45
4th place in 100 breaststroke: Groff - 1:07.91
5th place in 200 IM: Lauer - 2:14.09
5th place in 100 butterfly: H. Grune - 59.40
5th place in 100 breaststroke: H. Grune - 1:08.92
7th place in 500 freestyle: Lauer - 5:24.94

Winning gold for the boys was the 200 free relay team of seniors Christian Taylor and Sevryn Napora and juniors Nick Lauer and Adrian Beckford with a time of 1:29.30.

5th place in 200 medley relay: Taylor, Napora, junior Will Engel, Beckford - 1:40.45
8th place in 200 freestyle: Lauer - 1:50.76
8th place in 400 freestyle relay: Lauer, sophomore Sean Kelley, Beckford, Taylor - 3:22.53
