Girls and Boys Soccer Close out Season in PIAA Semifinals

Girls Soccer

The Shady Side Academy girls soccer team fell to Freedom Area, 3-2 in double overtime, in the PIAA Class 1A Girls Soccer Championship semifinals on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Mars Area High School. Sophomore Melissa Riggins scored the first goal for SSA, and senior Sophia McMahon scored with five minutes left in regulation, sending the game into overtime, but Freedom scored in the second OT to advance to the state championship. SSA was seeking its third trip to the PIAA finals, having won its first state title in 2017 after finishing as the runner-up in 2016.

SSA finishes the 2018 season with a 14-5 overall record. Congratulations to Head Coach Mary Lynch and the team on an amazing season!

Boys Soccer

The Shady Side Academy boys soccer team fell to Deer Lakes, 2-1, in the PIAA Class 2A Boys Soccer Championship semifinals on Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Mars Area high School. After a scoreless first half, senior Walter Navid scored to give Shady Side a 1-0 lead, but Deer Lakes scored twice in the final 6:10 of the game to earn the win. It was the fourth time the two teams met this year, having gone 1-1-1 in their previous three meetings.

SSA finishes the 2018 season with a 14-7-1 overall record, having won the program's second straight WPIAL title. Congratulations to Head Coach Ed Ellsworth and the team on an outstanding season!
