Five Seniors Sign NCAA National Letters of Intent

NLI Signees Nov. 2018

Five Shady Side Academy seniors officially signed their NCAA National Letters of Intent (NLI) to play Division I college athletics on Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2018, the first day of the NLI early signing period for all sports except football. The signees included three girls' ice hockey players, one girls' soccer player and one girls' field hockey player:

  • Chayla Edwards – Girls' Ice Hockey, University of Wisconsin, Madison
  • Clara McCormick – Girls' Field Hockey, Bucknell University
  • Gwyneth Philips – Girls' Ice Hockey, Northeastern University
  • Hannah Price – Girls' Ice Hockey, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
  • Krystyna Rytel – Girls' Soccer, University of Pittsburgh
Edwards, Philips and Price have been a critical part of the SSA girls ice hockey program's success under Head Coach Kate Binnie, helping the team to WIHLMA (Women's Interscholastic Hockey League of the Mid-Atlantic) titles in 2016 and 2017, and a runner-up finish in 2018. Edwards (defense) and Philips (goalie) have earned varsity letters and All-WIHLMA honors in each of their first three years as they head into their senior season, while Price (forward/defense) is a two-year letter winner and earned All-WIHLMA honors once. All three players also have played for the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite Hockey, Western Pennsylvania's premier AAA hockey organizations, for many years. Binnie has coached all three girls with Pens Elite as well.

McCormick is a four-year varsity letter-winner and starting goalie for the SSA field hockey team. She posted seven shutouts this fall while helping Coach Betsy Gorse's team win the 2018 WPIAL Championship. McCormick was a 2017 WPIAL All-Star, a member of the 2018-2019 Junior U.S. Women's National Indoor Field Hockey Team, and won gold at the USA Field Hockey National Indoor Tournament in 2017 and 2018. As a member of the WC Eagles Field Hockey Club, she traveled to China to compete in the 2017 U18 Chinese National Championships

Rytel is a four-year starter and letter-winner at attacking center midfield for the SSA girls' soccer team, helping the team to a WPIAL title and PIAA runner-up finish in 2016, a WPIAL runner-up finish and PIAA title in 2017, and a PIAA semifinal appearance in 2018. Under Head Coach Mary Lynch, she was the team's captain and leading scorer in 2018 with 29 goals, and has scored 130 goals in her career. She was named to the WPIAL all-section team all four years and named a WPIAL All-Star as a senior.

The signing ceremony and celebration was held in the Peter J. Kountz Theater of the Hillman Center for Performing Arts. The signees were joined by their coaches, college counselors, teachers, administrators, teammates, family and friends.

The NCAA's National Letter of Intent (NLI) is a binding agreement between a prospective student-athlete and an NLI member institution. By signing an NLI, the student-athlete agrees to attend the institution full-time for one academic year, while the institution agrees to provide athletics financial aid for one academic year.
