A second member of the Shady Side Academy Class of 2018 has earned the title of National Merit Scholar. Recent SSA graduate Seungwon "Jackie" Kim has been awarded the National Merit Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Scholarship, a college-sponsored National Merit Scholarship that provides up to $2,000 to National Merit Finalists who list RPI as their first-choice institution. The award is renewable on an annual basis for up to eight semesters. Kim plans to attend RPI in the fall.
Kim was among approximately 3,500 winners of College-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships announced by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) on June 6. An additional 500 college-sponsored scholars will be announced on July 16. In addition, approximately 1,000 Corporate-Sponsored National Merit Scholarships were announced on April 18 and 2,500 National Merit $2500 Scholarships were announced on May 9. In all, about 7,500 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $31 million are being awarded in 2018.
Kim joins classmate Robby Sveda, who won a National Merit $2500 Scholarship in May, in the ranks of 2018 National Merit Scholars. Kim and Sveda were among seven National Merit Finalists in SSA's Class of 2018.
