"Accidental Activists" Documentary Producer Visits Classes, Screens Film at SSA

Mandi WrightThe Shady Side Academy Senior School Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) welcomed Emmy Award-winning photojournalist and producer Mandi Wright to the Senior School campus on Monday, May 8. Wright, a Pittsburgh native, spoke to various classes about her position as a photographer/videographer with the Detroit Free Press, her role as producer of the documentary film Accidental Activists, and the evolution of newspapers and the media.

In the evening, Wright premiered Accidental Activists in the Hillman Center for Performing Arts. The documentary traces the five-year journey of Jayne Rowse and April DeBoer, two lesbians who were looking to overturn a law that would allow them to adopt their children, but at the recommendation of a federal court judge, ended up in the Supreme Court fighting Michigan's constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage. The case, which Wright followed from the outset, resulted in the Supreme Court legalizing same-sex marriage across the country in June 2015. The documentary screening was followed by Q&A with Wright.

Wright's visit to SSA was coordinated by sophomore Caitlin Mulvihill.
