Several academic prizes for the 2020-2021 school year were awarded to 11 students and recent alumni at Shady Side Academy Senior School's community assembly on Monday, Sept. 13, 2021.
While most 2020-2021 academic prizes were presented at the spring Prize Day assembly in May, these prizes are based on student academic performance through the end of the school year (June) and thus are awarded at the beginning of the next school year.
The Instructor's Prize in American History is a book prize is awarded to the student who, while enrolled in the U.S. History course, has completed the research paper that best displays the qualities of scholarship essential for developing competence in the study of history. The 2020-2021 winner was current senior Gigi Horgan for her paper, Rotten Fruit: A Banana Company, the CIA, and Covert Propaganda in Guatemala.
The John H. Cohen Family Award is a book prize given for general improvement in scholarship, vigor, citizenship and character to a member of the third, fourth and fifth forms (grades 9, 10 and 11). The 2020-2021 awards were presented to current sophomore Phillip Babuscio, junior Garrett Recker and senior Nylah Trabulsi.
The Richard S. Simon '39 and Kenneth L. Simon '71 Prize is awarded to that member of the graduating class who has shown the greatest improvement in grades during the senior year. The 2020-2021 award recipient was alumnus Mark Fire '21.
The Princeton Alumni Award is a book prize given by the Princeton Alumni Association of Western Pennsylvania to the student at the head of the class in the third, fourth and fifth forms (grades 9, 10 and 11). The 2020-2021 awards were presented to current sophomore Hari Viswanathan, junior Savita Thompson and senior Megan Dollard.
The Alfred C. Dickey Memorial Prize is awarded to that student standing at the head of the school in scholarship and may be awarded to a student in any form (grade). The 2020-2021 award was presented to current sophomore Hari Viswanathan.
The John C. Buchanan Prize is given to that member of the sixth form (grade 12) who graduates with highest honors, based on the work of the last two years at the Academy. The 2020-2021 award recipient was alumnus Raymond Zheng '21.
The John Daniel Baum Memorial Prize of books is awarded to the student graduating with second highest honors, based on the work of the last two years. The 2020-2021 award recipient was alumnus Zewei (Jason) Wu '21.
The Raymond F. Arnheim Memorial Award is given to that member of the sixth form (grade 12) who has the highest average for the senior year. Should the student receiving the Buchanan or Baum Prize be eligible for this award, the prize is then to be given to the next ranking honor student on the basis of scholarship for the senior year. The 2020-2021 award recipient was alumnus Tyler Hart '21.
