On Friday, March 10, the Senior School welcomed Maria Polinksy, director of marketing and communications for Literacy Pittsburgh, to community assembly as part of the Service Learning Club's ongoing Community Partner Speakers Series.
Polinksy spoke to the student body about Literacy Pittsburgh's mission of creating better lives through learning, and the free educational programs they offer to adults and families in Allegheny and Beaver counties. These programs include: adult reading, writing and math classes; high school equivalency preparation; career development; computer skills; English as a Second Language classes; citizenship classes; immigrant services and connections; family literacy programs; Oasis Intergenerational Tutoring; and Compass AmeriCorps.
Polinsky also spoke about ways that students can help or get involved with Literacy Pittsburgh, such as by hosting a fundraiser or book drive, recruiting an adult family member to become a tutor, or joining Compass AmeriCorps after high school.
The Service Learning Club announced that it plans to host a book drive on campus for Literacy Pittsburgh later this spring.
Thank you, Ms. Polinsky, for visiting the Senior School and educating us about the good work of your organization!
