Senior School Fall Play Wins Prime Stage Drama Awards

The Shady Side Academy Senior School production of Macbeth received eight nominations at the 4th Annual High School Drama Awards Ceremony, ultimately clinching three trophies. This gripping Shakespearean tragedy, centered around Macbeth, a Scottish general, and his wife, Lady Macbeth, on their relentless quest for power, serves as a timeless reminder of the perils of ambition, fate, deception, and free will.

In an evening filled with anticipation and excitement, the SSA production shone brightly, securing three well-deserved trophies. The Best Run Crew award went to the team of Alexander Bi, Lila Cox, Sam Davidheiser, and Ada Lin, whose behind-the-scenes efforts brought the production to life. Jay Zhu's captivating portrayal of Macbeth earned the title of Best Actress. Finally, the crowning achievement was the recognition of the SSA production as the Best Overall Production, solidifying its status as a standout among high school theatrical endeavors.

The presence of SSA's Senior School students at the awards ceremony on January 29 marked a celebration not only of their own remarkable work but also a recognition of the efforts of 12 other high school theater programs. Monteze Freeland, co-artistic director at City Theatre and Pittsburgh's 2022 Performer of the Year, hosted the event. Students had the opportunity to connect with peers from across the Pittsburgh region, while also mingling with industry professionals, including Wali Jamal, Pittsburgh's 2023 Performer of the Year, known for his unique distinction of performing in all 10 of August Wilson's Century Cycle plays.

The Prime Stage High School Drama Awards honor the dedication and passion of high school theater students. These awards specifically recognize non-musical productions, be they one-act or full-length plays, which are entirely student-run. Each student involved assumes direct responsibility for their respective departments, emphasizing the importance of teamwork and collaboration. The diverse range of award categories encompasses both backstage and onstage roles, underscoring the significance of every contributor in the production process.
