Lower School Families Plant Trees in Frick Park for Earth Day

On Sunday, April 23, more than 40 families from Shady Side Academy's Country Day School and Junior School met in Frick Park for the Shady Side Gives Back, a community service event to plant trees and celebrate Earth Day.

Alongside Pittsburgh Park Rangers, SSA families helped to plant more than 40 water-loving trees to two areas along Nine Mile Run Trail in Frick Park that were suffering from canopy gaps. Ten different tree species were added to the site, including Quaking Aspens, Silky Dogwoods, Bladdernut and others. Afterwards, the SSA volunteers enjoyed a Kona Ice treat provided by the Country Day School and Junior School Parents Associations.

It was the second Shady Side Gives Back event of the 2022-2023 school year. In November, more than 30 SSA families volunteered to help clean up trash and plant willow stakes in the park.

Thank you to the CDS and JS Parents’ Associations and Junior School parent Gia Qin for organizing the event; to Park Rangers Vig, Devin, Chris, Navin and Erica for their help; and to all of the lower school families who volunteered their time!
