Girls' Track & Field Wins Medals in Three Events at PIAA Championships

The Shady Side Academy girl's track and field team captured medals for top eight finishes in three of the four events they competed in at the 2023 PIAA Class 2A Individual Championships, held at Shippensburg University on Friday-Saturday, May 26-27. 

Junior Chelsea Hartman finished fifth in the 3200-meter run to earn a PIAA medal, setting a new school record with a time of 10:58.25. Her time broke the previous SSA record of 11:03.27 set by Katie Roll '05 in 2005. 

Hartman also earned a state medal in the 1600-meter run, finishing eighth with a personal best time of 5:11.01.

The 4x800-meter relay team of freshman Ella Van Norman, freshman Rhyley Bendel, senior Kate Nury and Hartman finished eighth with a personal best time of 9:48.08 to earn a PIAA medal. Sophomore Avery Litwin was the alternate on the relay team.

In addition, freshman Rhyley Bendel finished 14th in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:23.84.
