On Friday, Nov. 11, No. 6 Shady Side Academy upset No. 3 Elizabeth Forward, 31-17, in the quarterfinals of the 2022 WPIAL Class 3A Football Championship, propelling the Bulldogs into the WPIAL semifinals for the first time since 2008.
A strong defense powered the Bulldogs to the win in the pouring rain. An 80-yard kickoff return by Naiziim Daniels and an 11-yard shovel pass from Eddie DeBruce to Joey Bellinotti gave the Bulldogs a 14-10 lead heading into halftime. In the second half, Patrick Bryan recovered an SSA fumble and ran it 3 yards for a touchdown, Harran Zureikat kicked a 28-year field goal, and Darren Haynes added a 20-yard TD run.
Shady Side (7-4) advances to take on No. 2 Avonworth in the semifinals on Friday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m., just down the road at Fox Chapel Area High School. Tickets are $5 for students and $7 for adults at https://gofan.co/WPIAL. All tickets at the gate are $7.
Good luck to Head Coach Chuck DiNardo '00 and the team. Come out and support your Bulldogs!
