2016-2017 Report of Philanthropy

A Message From the President

Tom CangianoDear Friends of Shady Side Academy,

It is a pleasure to present to you the Report of Philanthropy for the 2016-2017 school year. The generosity of our many parents, alumni, grandparents and friends during the past year set a new record in the Blue & Gold Fund of $1,458,662 and helped to raise more than $6.4 million overall for the Academy.

Tuition revenue covers 75 percent of our operating budget, and contributions to the Blue & Gold Fund help to fill the gap between tuition revenue and operating expenses. Additional contributions reflect support for financial aid, faculty compensation and professional development, as well as capital projects, endowment and other initiatives. All of these gifts help to ensure that we are providing the best educational experience for our students, and that we are able to attract and to retain highly qualified and dedicated teachers.

I am pleased to report that construction of the McIlroy Center for Science and Innovation is progressing very quickly, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony planned for some time in May 2017. Not only will the building provide a stunning environment for our students to study science, it will also be equipped with sophisticated lab equipment that will allow students to pursue very high-level experiments and research. Phase two of the project, which we hope to begin next year, will be the transformation of our existing science space into a cutting-edge technology and maker space. To facilitate our growing seven-day boarding population, we are opening a new six-bed health center, which was built as an addition to our overnight nurse’s residence. Finally, we are putting the finishing touches on a plan to upgrade our core athletic complex at the Senior School, a project that is long overdue. All of these projects will help us to continue to offer the most comprehensive, well-rounded independent school education in the region.

On behalf of all of us at Shady Side Academy, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for your generosity. I look forward to our continued work together and the exciting years ahead.

Sincerely,

Thomas M. Cangiano
Academy President
