A Typical Day

A Middle School student's typical day runs from 7:40 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Here's a look at how their day unfolds. View a sample sixth grade schedule.

Arrival

Students arrive between 7:30 and 7:40 a.m. and are greeted by a faculty member in our "cafetorium" (half cafeteria, half auditorium). At 7:40, students head to homeroom, where their advisor checks in with them to ensure that they're prepared for the day.

Classes and Lunch

Academic classes begin at 8 a.m. and run until 2:15 p.m. Classes are 50 minutes in length, with the exception of a 75-minute sixth period that includes a 25-minute lunch for each grade. For lunch we offer a superb selection of hot and cold items, including a full soup and salad bar, in our cafeteria, which holds a Sustainable Pittsburgh Restaurant Gold designation. Students may also bring their own lunches.

Morning Break

At 9:40 a.m., the daily bulletin is read over the PA system by an eighth grader. Following the bulletin, students have a 10-minute morning break. This is a great opportunity to socialize, have a snack, check in with your advisor or relax. One day per cycle our Parents Association provides bagels for all students and faculty. This greatly anticipated day is known as "Bagel Day," and is always a welcome treat.

Conference Period

Conference period is a wonderful aid in the enrichment of our students. At 12:45 p.m. students head back to their homerooms to check in with their advisors. They can also meet with teachers for extra help, for enrichment or to get a question answered, or get a jump start on their homework. This period is also used for school assemblies, music ensemble rehearsals and advisory group activities.

Athletics/Activities Period

At 2:15 p.m., students are dismissed for their athletic/activity period, which may occur on the Middle School campus or at our 130-acre Senior School campus just down the road. All students are dismissed from the Senior School campus at 3:45 p.m.
