Junior School

Welcome to the online home of Shady Side Academy’s Junior School. The Junior School enrolls 230 students in grades PK–5 and is located in the Point Breeze section of Pittsburgh.

The Junior School program is based on educational best practices and strives to create an environment where children are respected as individuals while also learning to be part of a community. Our teachers instruct students in the academic skills of reading, writing, math, science and social studies, and we integrate the arts and athletics into our daily activities.

Because we understand that the social curriculum is as important as academics, we are guided in our work by the Responsive Classroom program. Without the social curriculum in place, the academics do not flourish the way they should. We strive to differentiate instruction so that we meet children where they are and take them forward. Our teachers develop the path for the child, not the child for the path. The "one size fits all" method of teaching does not work well for children because they work at many different levels and use different learning styles.

As a parent, I have often said that having a child is like allowing your heart to walk around outside your body. Many thanks to our parents for trusting us with their hearts.
