To round out the spring of 2012, the Alumni & Development Office traveled to Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and New York City. On May 22, 2012, an alumni reception was held at The Cosmos Club in D.C., which is heavily populated by SSA alumni. More than 60 guets were there to network and hear President Cangiano give an update on SSA after being introduced by Board of Visitors member, Kerry Hannon ’78.
The next evening, Board of Visitors member, Ted Bream ‘73 hosted alumni at The Union League. One of the largest turnouts of alumni in Philadelphia in recent years created a great atmosphere and a memorable event. The guests were entertained by an unforgettable impression of former College Counselor Lowell Innes, by Board of Visitor member George Graham ’55.
The last stop was an evening reception in New York City. Bill Wallace ’66 hosted alumni at the Metropolitan Club and also made heartfelt, opening remarks reflecting on SSA and welcoming everyone to the event. A rainy night in Manhattan didn’t deter SSA alumni from getting together. Over 70 guests attended the reception as the regional event tour ended for the year.

California Regional Alumni Receptions - Feb. 6-10, 2012
Academy President Tom Cangiano, along with the Alumni & Development Staff, spent the week of Feb. 6 in California meeting with alumni and hosting three receptions throughout the state. There are nearly 400 alumni living in California working in a wide range of professions from engineers at Google to actors and directors in Hollywood.
On Feb. 7, nearly 25 SSA alumni attended the first ever Palo Alto Alumni Reception at the Stanford Faculty Club. Economics professor John Taylor ’64 arranged for the gathering to take place at the Club located on Stanford’s campus. The following evening a reception was held at the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco where 32 alumni turned out. The venue was made available to Shady Side through the courtesy of Garrett Loube, friend of Board of Visitors member Andy Mathieson ’74. On Thursday, Feb. 9, Jim Rothenberg ’64 arranged for a reception in Los Angeles to be held at The California Club in downtown L.A. Twenyy-five alumni attended the reception and shared fond memories of their time at SSA.
Thank you to everyone who attended receptions and meetings in California. Shady Side Academy hopes to make an annual trip to California, so please keep up updated on any changes in your contact information.
In-College Reunion and Holiday Brunch - Jan. 2, 2012
The In-College Reunion and Holiday Brunch, hosted by the Class of 2012, was held on Monday, Jan. 2, 2012. The Classes of 2008-2011 were invited back to campus to reconnect with friends and former teachers. A total of 71 alums and faculty were in attendance to share in this SSA holiday tradition. Thank you to everyone who attended and braved the snowy, cold weather.
Boston Alumni Reception - Dec. 1, 2011
This year’s Boston Alumni Reception was held in the Back Bay neighborhood of Boston at The Back Bay Hotel on Dec. 1, 2011. Several alumni welcomed President Tom Cangiano back to his hometown. Vice President for Development Jeff Day was also in attendance to meet alumni and gain further perspective on Shady Side Academy. Thank you to all who attended.

Fall Downtown Lunch - Nov. 21, 2011
Sponsored by the Shady Side Academy Alumni Association, this year's Fall Downtown Luncheon was held on Nov. 21, 2011 at the Allegheny HYP Club in Downtown Pittsburgh. The featured speaker was alumna Bentley Weiner ’92, a coordinating producer for HBO Sports who won her fourth Sports Emmy in 2011 for her work on the series 24/7 Penguins/Capitals: Road to the NHL Winter Classic. Alumni had the chance to network and mingle prior to Bentley’s presentation which included clips from her work over the years. ts complex.
Chicago Alumni Reception - Nov. 10, 2011
Class Agent Ryan Ruskin '86, hosted the Chicago Alumni Reception on Nov. 10, 2011 at the Racquet Club of Chicago. Twenty-five alumni were in attendance to meet with President Tom Cangiano and Vice President for Development Jeff Day, who is new to the Academy this year. More and more alumni call Chicago home these days, and SSA was glad to reconnect with so many.
New York City Alumni Reception - May 12, 2011
On a beautiful night on the upper west side of Manhattan, more than 75 alumni and guests gathered at Alice Tully Hall in the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts for an SSA alumni reception. Board of Visitors Member Kim Ayers Shariff '89 was the event's gracious host for the evening, as she works as legal counsel at Lincoln Center. From the terrace, guests enjoyed views of Broadway and the remainder of the Performing Arts complex. Alums lined up to introduce themselves to Academy President Tom Cangiano and no one seemed to want the evening to end.
Boston Alumni Reception - April 20, 2011
The picturesque views from the Downtown Harvard Club in Boston were an added bonus to the SSA Alumni Reception that took place there on April 20, 2011. Around 30 alumni were in attendance to meet Academy President Tom Cangiano and reminisce about their days at SSA. Tom Cangiano shared with the group why SSA was the right choice for him and his thoughts on what lies ahead for the Academy. Thank you to all who attended.
Florida Alumni Receptions - March 22-23, 2011
Shady Side Academy spent a few days over spring break traveling south to Naples and Palm Beach, Florida. The trip was an opportunity to reconnect with alumni and past parents, and also to introduce Academy President Tom Cangiano to the school’s supporters in Florida.
Dick Kappel ’50 and Bob Todd ’50 hosted a luncheon at Bear’s Paw Country Club on Tuesday, March 22, with more than 30 guests in attendance.
On Wednesday, March 23, Abby and Reid ’54 Ruttenberg hosted a reception at the Palm Beach Country Club. More than 40 alumni and past parents gathered to catch up on the latest news with each other and SSA.
Tom Cangiano addressed both groups regarding what drew him to Shady Side, as well as his thoughts on what is ahead in the near future for the school. The Academy is extremely grateful for the generous support of its hosts.

A great mix of older and younger alums gathered in our nation's capital on Feb. 24 at the Hotel Palomar to meet the new Academy President Tom Cangiano and to reminisce with faculty members Cari Batchelar, David Chottiner, Buddy Hendershot and Sue Whitney. Board of Visitor members John Duff '59 and Tom Worrall '87 were amongst the 60 alums in attendance. Our thanks and appreciation to everyone who attended.
