With over 50 participants this year, Team SSA was able to raise $3,111 for the Pittsburgh Race for the Cure. The team consisted of students, parents, teachers and alumni who came together for a uniting cause. For the third consecutive year Shady Side won the School Team Challenge Independent Schools for most participants and most funds raised. A new addition this year was a post race cookout hosted by Alumni Council members at the Anderson Shelter in Schenley Park. View the Race for the Cure slideshow.

Special thank yous to...

  • The Grossman Family who raised over $1,800
  • Matt Henderson '96 and Andy Allen '96 for organizing the cookout
  • Metz Food Services for donating the burgers and dogs
  • To each and every SSA team member who braved the cold May morning to support Race for the Cure and their Shady Side teammates

 Tom Southard

More than 80 alumni, trustees and current parents attended the Spring Downtown Lunch that honored featured speaker and Academy President Tom Southard on April 20, 2010. The lunch was held at the Duquesne Club and was Tom Southard's final Downtown Lunch as President.  The lunch is traditionally a networking opportunity combined with a guest speaker who is an expert in their professional field. Tom Southard's address focused on how he arrived in independent school education and his experiences here at SSA. At the conclusion of the lunch, Alumni Council President Eben Adams '89 presented Tom with a plaque with the "S" letter on it for his steadfast service to the Alumni of Shady Side Academy.
