Student Clubs

Students have the opportunity to join and lead student clubs based on their interests, with guidance from a faculty advisor.

Academian (Yearbook) To record the year in pictures, to honor the senior class and to have fun while doing this. Faculty advisor Ms. Batchelar.

Angles To publish non-fiction pieces written by members of the Shady Side Academy Senior School community. Faculty advisor Ms. Garvey.

Asian Student Union To promote and spread awareness of the Asian culture. Faculty advisor Ms. Hallgren.

Baseball Club Faculty advisors Mr. Grandizio and Mr. Miller.

Black Student Union To learn about African American culture through discussion, activities, music and community service, and to also create a safe space for people of all races. Faculty advisor Ms. Greene and Ms. Williams.

Chess Club To spread knowledge of chess, its strategies and advantages and.to allow interested students to enjoy playing. Faculty advisor Ms. Skinner.

Chiapas To learn about the Tzotil-Maya community in Chiapas, Mexico, and fundraise so that more of its children have the possibility of continuing in their elementary and secondary education. Faculty advisor Dr. McGreevy-Morales.

Chinese Club To promote Chinese language and culture. Faculty advisor Mr. Lamb.

Daybreak Club To give kids a break from a hard day of school and raise money to donate to charity. Faculty advisor Mr. Wizard.

Diversity Leadership Council Faculty advisor Ms. Williams

Egerian To create an online literary magazine by soliciting, choosing and editing submissions from throughout the school, creating an engaging design and building a website. Faculty advisor Ms. McDonald.

Environmental Club To spread awareness of the environmental concerns for the world through videos, in school activities and out-of-school service projects. Faculty advisor Ms. Powers.

Fill the Shelves To collect food and raise money for the shelves of Catholic Charities, supplying food to the poor. Faculty advisor Mrs. Krauland.

Flag Club To teach and uphold the traditions associated with the flag; to raise money to support causes for veterans.

French Club To promote the knowledge and excitement about French culture outside of class with viewings of French media and out-of-school trips to French restaurants. Faculty advisor Dr. McGreevy-Morales and Ns, Schneider.

Future Business Leaders of America To develop business skills. Faculty advisor Mr. Giuntini.

Gargoyle Society and Theater Club To provide both on and off stage opportunities for students to experience firsthand what it is like to be part of a theatrical production. Faculty advisor Mr. Davidheiser and Ms. Hardy-Bingham.

Gay-Straight Alliance To create an environment in which GBLT students and faculty can feel safe and to promote acceptance and knowledge. Faculty advisors Ms. Hardy-Bingham and Ms. Williams.

German Club To teach and celebrate the history and cultures of Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Faculty advisor Ms. Burgard.

GLOSS (Great Ladies of Shady Side) To discuss issues affecting girls. Faculty advisor Ms. Skinner.

Hillman Volunteer Ushers To form a proud corps of volunteers who support the arts by assisting the patrons at the Hillman Center for the Performing Arts. Faculty advisor Ms. Rubin.

Hockey Helps To provide disadvantaged and disabled children the opportunity to play ice hockey and to undertake other hockey related volunteer opportunities such as equipment drives. Faculty advisor Mr. Johnson.

Italian Club To help students study the Italian language while also fostering an appreciation for Italian culture. Faculty advisor Mr. Guintini.

Jewish Student Union Faculty advisor Mr. Weiss.

Latin Club To explore Latin culture through games and out-of-class activities. Faculty advisor Ms. Belles.

Library Associates Faculty advisor Ms. Williams.

Math Team To compete against other local schools in regular mathematics competitions. Faculty advisor Mr. Tony.

Mock Trial To gain experience in a professional field while still in high school, and also to increase public speaking and argument-building skills. We participate in the statewide mock trial competition of the Pa. Bar Association. Faculty advisor Mr. Coyne.

Model U.N. To prepare students for Model U.N. conferences, in which the working of the United Nations is replicated. We participate in three conferences a year. Faculty advisor Mr. Giuntini.

Performing Arts Club To spread the performing arts around the SSA community. Faculty advisor Dr. Brill.

Personal Finance Club To discuss various aspects of personal finance and actively manage an investment fund of over $25,000. Faculty advisor Mr. Tony.

Portfolio Art Club To nurture a strong personal interest in the visual arts. Faculty advisor Mr. Goodwin.

Quiz Bowl Team To compete in local and regional tournaments and prepare for general knowledge trivia.

Robotics Club To work on robotic projects and robotic competitions, including the U.S. First Robotics Competition. Faculty advisor Mr. Wizzard.

Science Olympiad To prepare for Science Olympiad tournaments consisting of 23 science, technology and engineering events. We attend four or five tournaments a year. Faculty advisor Mrs. Hayes-Rowan.

Service Learning To work to make our world a better place through service. Faculty advisor Ms. Ament. Visit the Service Learning page to learn more.

Sign Language Club To learn basic signs and grammar of American Sign Language and gain an appreciation of deaf culture. Faculty advisors Ms. Williams.

Slam Poetry Club To write poetry and organize and attend poetry slams for young writers. Faculty advisor Mrs. McDonald.

Spanish Club To enrich students' understanding of Hispanic culture. Students visit local Hispanic restaurants, celebrate Hispanic holidays and fundraise. Faculty advisor Ms. Alvarez.

Speech & Debate Team To learn, practice and compete in tournaments locally, statewide and nationally. Students learn to speak in front of audiences, to compose and deliver their own speeches and/or argue on both sides of a current event topic. Faculty advisors Ms. Krauland and Ms. Hallgren.

Shady Side News An in-house publication written by and for the Senior School student body as a venue for reporting school news, creative features and student opinions. Faculty advisors Ms. Joseph and Ms. Irvine.

Technical Theater Faculty advisor Mr. Davidheiser.

World Quest To promote global knowledge by participating in an annual world trivia competition with 60 other high schools. Faculty advisor Mr. Colt.

Writing Center A peer tutoring center staffed by student scribes. Our motto is: We make better writers, not just better papers. Faculty advisor Ms. Garvey.
