Scholarship Information
The following list represents information received by the College Counseling Office but does not represent all scholarship opportunities available. Students are expected to do their own careful search for scholarships to complement the information below.
The following scholarships require nominations from a school counselor in order for students to be eligible:
Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Program - The Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Program recognizes and rewards young volunteers (ages 6-18) whose efforts have made a positive impact on their communities. Awards range from $50 to $10,000, and are presented at the local, regional, and national level. More information is available at: www.kohlskids.com. The following scholarships do not require a nomination, and any student may apply if interested:

United Jewish Federation Central Scholarship and Loan Referral Service (CSLRS) - Any Jewish high school senior with financial need is encouraged to apply. Students must have lived in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington, or Westmoreland counties for at least two years. Depending on the scholarship fund, factors such as academic achievement, field of study, school attending, and community involvement may be considered. The application is available at www.centralscholarship.org. Deadline - February 8, 2010.
KFC Colonel's Scholars Program - Designed to assist students with financial need who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree at a public institution within their state of residence, the Colonel's Scholars Program awards scholarships of up to $5,000 per year. To qualify, a student must be a current senior with a minimum GPA of 2.75 or above, and plan to enroll in a public, in-state college or university. Complete the application online starting December 1, 2009 at www.kfcscholars.org. Deadline - February 10, 2010.
The Traditional Big 33 Academic Scholarship - Big 33 scholarships provide financial assistance to high school seniors who exhibit excellence in a well-rounded educational and extracurricular program. See your counselor and visit www.big33.org/scholarship/ for more information. Deadline - February 13, 2010.
The National Co-Op Scholarship Program - The National Commission for Cooperative Education will award 170 merit co-op scholarships of $6,000 each (most renewable for four years), to students who plan to participate in college cooperative education programs at one of the Partner Colleges and Universities listed below. Colleges participating include: Drexel University, Johnson and Wales University, Kettering University, Pace University, Rochester Institute of Technology, University of Cincinnati, University of Toledo, and Wentworth Institute of Technology. Northside Leadership Conference 2010 Scholarship Program - Recognizing high school seniors who volunteer their time to improve the Northside community, this scholarship is presented in the amount of $1,000. Eligible students must reside on the Northside (see Ms. Heitzer for a list of included neighborhoods), but do not need to attend a Northside high school. Application forms can be found at www.pittsburghnorthside.com, or by seeing Ms. Heitzer. Deadline - Friday, March 12, 2010, by 5:00 pm.
Lola G. Duff and William H. Duff Scholarship Program - Protestant students are encouraged to apply for these renewable scholarships. Both merit and need-based awards will be given, with a minimum GPA of 3.0 required for merit awards (2.8 for need-based awards). Deadline - March 17, 2010; Please note, only the first 1,000 applications will be considered, so act quickly!
2010 Beulah Frey Environmental Scholarship - Sponsored by the Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania, scholarships are awarded to graduating students who are interested in furthering their studies in an environmentally-related field. Eligible seniors must be attending a college or university and majoring in an environmental area of study. Scholarship applications can be found at www.aswp.org; follow the "education" link. Deadline - March 31, 2010.
Pittsburgh Italian Scholarship Fund - Available to students of Italian heritage (at least one parent), who also demonstrate excellent academic performance, as well as financial need. Scholarships total $12,000, and are given as $3,000 annual awards over four years. Students must be attending one of the following area universities: California University of Pennsylvania, Carlow University, Carnegie Mellon University, Chatham University, Duquesne University, La Roche College, University of Pittsburgh, Point Park University, Robert Morris University, Saint Vincent College, Seton Hill University, Washington and Jefferson College Please see Ms. Heitzer for an application. Deadline - March 31, 2010.
Federal Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program - Administered by PHEAA, the Byrd Scholarship honors students who have shown academic excellence in high school, and have the potential for continued progress at the college level. A grade point average of 3.5 (or above), an SAT score of at least 1150 on the 1600 scale (ACT composite of 25), and a rank in the top 5% of the class, is required of applicants. Westinghouse Women In Nuclear Scholarship - Supported by the Westinghouse Electric Company Women In Nuclear Chapter (W-WIN), this $2,500 scholarship is awarded to a female high school senior who is planning to major in engingeering, mathematics, or physical sciences in college. Applications are available on the W-WIN website, www.westinghousenuclear.com/Community/women_in_nuclear.shtm. Deadline - April 6, 2010.
Landmarks Scholarship Award - Recipients of the Landmarks Scholarship will be awarded $1,000 per year, renewable for four years, with a maximum grant of $4,000. Applicants must be residents of Allegheny County, have been accepted to a college or university, and have a senior year GPA of at least 3.25 (some exceptions may be made). The award is based on a student's academic achievement, community service, work experience, financial need, and interest in the history, architecture and/or landscape design of the Pittsburgh region. AES Engineers 2010 Scholarship - AES Engineering Solutions presents scholarship awards of $500 to eligible college students.
