Welcome to Mr. Stern's Third Grade
Third Grade Overview:
In Third Grade we will grow together, play together and learn together as we take our minds on historical travels to the Colonial Times, the American Revolution, and the Westward Expansion of the United States. Students will also complete a United States reserach project which will culminate with an annual State Fair! We will read together, as we enjoy three class novels, Ramona Quimby, Age 8; A Lion to Guard Us; and Grasshopper Summer. Also, we will problem solve together as we focus on many concepts throughout the year, including, mental math, number bonds, bar model drawing, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, graphing, money, measurement, and many more inside the Math-in-Focus curriculum. Additionally, we will grow as independent writers as we explore a new writing workshop class focusing on narrative, information and opinion writing. Throughout the entire year, one of our main goals will be growing together as much more responsible and organized students. Nothing but Teamwork in Third Grade!
My name is Daniel Stern, and I graduated from the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg in 2005 with a BA in English, and also from Duquesne University in 2008 with a M.S.Ed in Elementary Education. I am thrilled and eager to implement new ideas to improve my classroom and the student's experiences! Looking back on my short time here at the Jr. School, I've played many roles: After-School Discovery Director; Coordinator of the Publishing Center; Fourth & Fifth Grade Physical Education; and Day Camp Discovery Director. Currently I am a member of the Senior School Residential Life community. Outside of school, I enjoy playing soccer, hiking, and spending time with my wife Katie and our two dogs Murray and Theo.
