Welcome to Mrs. Hilton's FIFTH Grade at shady side academy junior school

Fifth Grade Math program

Beginning in the 2012 - 2013 school year, the Junior School adopted the Math in Focus program. Published by Marshall Cavendish Education, a division of Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishing Company, the program approaches mathematics similar to the methods used in Singapore. Deep math understanding coupled with problem solving techniques highlight the student practices. Building a solid foundation through learning, consolidating, and applying skills, the students become persevering mathematical problem solvers. Not only will math class be instructional, the class will certainly be fun!

Teacher Biography

I have been teaching at Shady Side Academy for 10 years. My association with SSA includes the historic privilege of being one of the first females to attend the Senior School in 1973. I graduated in 1977, moving to Denison University. After years of banking, tending to my beautiful daughters, and teaching aerobics, I decided to return to school for my MAT in elementary education. Fortunately for me, the timing of my graduation from Chatham University and SSA openings coincided and I have been here ever since. For 8 years, I taught third grade and now have the privilege of teaching fifth grade math.
