Welcome to the online home of Shady Side Academy's Middle School! The Middle School serves a co-ed population of approximately 230 students in grades 6-8. Our 35-acre campus is located in the Fox Chapel suburb of Pittsburgh.
The Middle School is a place of transition for young adolescents who are growing at a rapid pace socially, emotionally and intellectually. Our mission is to take students from the supportive, yet challenging, environment of elementary school and help them to gain greater independence in their academic and overall school life as they prepare for the challenge of high school. Here they begin to make choices, take on more responsibilities and learn to advocate for themselves in a supportive environment that encourages intellectual risk-taking.
The rigorous curriculum has a balance of inquiry, skill development, critical thinking and subject mastery. It helps students build excellent study habits, while encouraging intellectual curiosity and cooperative learning skills. New ideas are celebrated, and openness to them is encouraged. We also emphasize the skills necessary to become confident learners and build upon those skills at every level. Students learn to reason logically, to communicate clearly, and to use factual information to support their ideas.
Life at the Middle School is also a balance of academics, arts and athletics. Our required co-curricular program of arts and athletics, along with our advisory system, help students discover new talents and think about who they are and who they would like to become.
With caring adults who nurture them and guide them through their time at the Middle School, students become proficient learners and also gain understanding of how to be better citizens in an ever-changing, diverse world. Adherence to our five Guiding Principles of Respect, Honesty, Responsibility, Safety and Kindness grounds everything that we do.
