Homecoming/Reunion Weekend this year was another in a long line of great Shady Side Academy events. There was something for everyone.

catch up over eighteen holes.
The weekend started off with several determined-looking foursomes teeing off in the summer-like heat at the Pittsburgh Field Club. While simultaneously, Jonathan Zittrain '87 was delivering a presentation in the Richard E. Rauh Theater to the Senior School students and faculty on the history of the internet and where technology is headed.

Alumni prepare to process to McCune Dining Hall for
the Alumni Dinner to the tune of a melodious bagpipe and against the backdrop
of a setting sun.
Friday evening started off with alumni performances on stage in the Richard E. Rauh Theater which led into welcome reception and alumni dinner in McCune Dining Hall. The highlight of Friday evening was Bob Grandizio, Sr.'s speech at the dinner. During Bob's final pre-retirement Homecoming, he spoke candidly about the joys (and pains) of being a father as well as how important the alumni of Shady Side Academy are to the school. The Grandizio family was on hand to cheer on the patriarch this beloved SSA family. The evening concluded with Bob Grandizio, Jr., Assistant Athletic Director, presenting his dad with a Shady Side letter jacket.

John Kramer '57 welcomes the 50th Reunion Class of
1957 to the
annual Alumni Dinner in McCune Dining Hall.
Saturday morning began early with the running of the Al Stewart Memorial Shady Stride. Alumnus, B.J. Siegel '87, was the winner of the grueling 5K, finishing in just over 25 minutes. Soon after the conclusion of the 'Stride', the campus was flooded with alums, students, parents and faculty just in time for the start of the Children's Homecoming Play. Senior School students Margaret Fero '10, Zack Wright '10 and Hanna Brourman '11 received well-deserved laughs and applause from the overflowing crowd during the performance of Furry Tails with a Twist.

Homecoming Play, Furry Tales with a Twist.
From the theater, the crowd rushed down the hill to the Kids' Karnival organized by Brendan Scott '09 and Mike McDonald '09, where everyone could participate in carnival games and pumpkin painting.

A race in the Moon Bounce was just one of the many
fun activities for children at the Kids' Karnival.

Ralston Merchant '67 and James McCune '67 chat over
lunch before the start of the football game.

The Picnic Box Lunch was a great start to Saturday
afternoon's festivities!
In keeping with tradition, during halftime of the football game, (an SSA victory) reunion year captains of athletic teams were recognized for their leadership. As Bob Grandizio announced the names of his former players and boarders, a plane flew overhead sending a message to Bob from the Shady Side Academy community. SSA loves Bob G . From campus, alums headed to their respective reunion venues where senior prom dates, football co-captains and Gargoyle society leads reunited and relived some of their most memorable adolescent moments. Click here to see photos of each reunion class dinner!
Homecoming 2008 is just around the corner. Classes ending in 3's and 8's will have their turn to relive old times. SSA has already ordered great weather and beautiful fall foliage, so please start talking with your classmates and planning now.
