New York City Alumni Reception - May 12, 2011

On a beautiful night on the upper west side of Manhattan, over 75 Alumni and guests gathered at Alice Tully Hall in the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts for a reception. Board of Visitors Member Kim Ayers Shariff '89 was the event's gracious host for the evening, as she works as legal counsel at Lincoln Center. From the terrace, guests enjoyed views of Broadway and the remainder of the Performing Arts complex. Alums lined up to introduce themselves to Academy President Tom Cangiano and no one seemed to want the evening to end.

Boston Alumni Reception - April 20, 2011

The picturesque views from the Downtown Harvard Club in Boston were an added bonus to the SSA Alumni Reception that took place there on April 20, 2011. Around 30 alumni were in attendance to meet Academy President Tom Cangiano and reminisce about their days at SSA. Tom Cangiano shared with the group why SSA was the right choice for him and his thoughts on what lies ahead for the Academy. Thank you to all who attended.

Florida Alumni Receptions - March 22 and 23, 2011

Shady Side Academy spent a few days over spring break traveling south to Naples and Palm Beach, Florida. The trip was an opportunity to reconnect with alumni and past parents, and also to introduce Academy President Tom Cangiano to the school’s supporters in Florida. 

Dick Kappel ’50 and Bob Todd ’50 hosted a luncheon at Bear’s Paw Country Club on Tuesday, March 22, with more than 30 guests in attendance. 

On Wednesday, March 23, Abby and Reid ’54 Ruttenberg hosted a reception at the Palm Beach Country Club. More than 40 alumni and past parents gathered to catch up on the latest news with each other and SSA.

Tom Cangiano addressed both groups regarding what drew him to Shady Side, as well as his thoughts on what is ahead in the near future for the school. The Academy is extremely grateful for the generous support of its hosts Dick Kappel ’50, Bob Todd ’50 and Abby and Reid ’54 Ruttenberg.

Washington, D.C. Alumni Reception - February 24, 2011

A great mix of older and younger alums gathered in our nation's capital on Thursday, February 24 at the Hotel Palomar to meet the new Academy President Tom Cangiano and to reminisce with faculty members Mrs. Cari Batchelar, Mr. David Chottiner, Mr. Buddy Hendershot, and Ms. Sue Whitney. Board of Visitor members, John Duff '59 and Tom Worrall '87, were amongst the 60 alums in attendance. Our thanks and appreciation to everyone who attended.

Chicago Alumni Reception - January 24, 2011

Board of Vistors member, David Yaccino '86, hosted the Chicago Alumni Reception on Jan. 24 at the Hyatt Center. Philadelphia Alumni Reception - November 29, 2010

Alumni gathered at the Palomar Hotel in downtown Philadelphia to connect with each other and re-engage with their alma mater. The event welcomed new Academy President Tom Cangiano as the speaker. Alumni Ice Hockey Game - November 26, 2010

While the day after Thanksgiving is traditionally the day to start holiday shopping, the tradition at Shady Side Academy is to host the annual Alumni Hockey Game. Alumni laced up their skates and hit the ice at the Roy McKnight Hockey Center, joining former teammates in a friendly competition.

Downtown Luncheon - November 10, 2010

The Alumni Association hosted the 2010 Fall Downtown Luncheon on Wednesday, November 10 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. at the Allegheny HYP Club. SSA President Tom Cangiano was the featured speaker.  Tom shared his thoughts on his past as an educator and his work at schools overseas, as well as what the future could hold for the Academy.  Those in attendance had the chance to reconnect and network with classmates as well as the opportunity to ask SSA's new president many thoughtful questions.

Team SSA Races for the Cure – May 9, 2010

With over 50 participants this year, Team SSA was able to raise $3,111 for the Komen Pittsburgh Race for the Cure. The team consisted of SSA alumni, students, parents and teachers who came together to raise money for breast cancer. For the third consecutive year Shady Side won the School Team Challenge – Independent Schools category for most participants and most funds raised. A new addition this year was a post-race cookout hosted by Alumni Council members at the Anderson Shelter in Schenley Park. View the Race for the Cure slideshow. Special thank yous to...

Spring Downtown Lunch – April 20, 2010

More than 80 alumni, trustees and current parents attended the Spring Downtown Lunch that honored featured speaker and Academy President Tom Southard on April 20, 2010. The lunch was held at the Duquesne Club and was Tom Southard's final Downtown Lunch as President.  The lunch is traditionally a networking opportunity combined with a guest speaker who is an expert in their professional field. Tom Southard's address focused on how he arrived in independent school education and his experiences here at SSA. At the conclusion of the lunch, Alumni Council President Eben Adams '89 presented Tom with a plaque with the "S" letter on it for his steadfast service to the Alumni of Shady Side Academy. Washington, D.C. Alumni Reception - March 18, 2010

 U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack and Academy President Tom Southard Visit Before D.C. Alumni Event While in Washington, D.C., for a Shady Side Academy Alumni Reception on Thursday, March 18, 2010, Academy President Tom Southard and Vice President for Advancement Patrick Tevlin visited with U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack, SSA Class of 1968. During their visit, Southard presented Secretary Vilsack with an SSA history book signed by Pulitzer Prize-winning author David McCullough '51. Fellow alumnus John M. Duff Jr. '59 graciously hosted the Alumni Reception that same evening at The Metropolitan Club. The more than 70 alumni in attendance, class years ranging from 1952-2005, received updates on the state of the Academy and incoming Academy President Tom Cangiano. In attendance were Board of Visitor members Kerry Hannon ’78, Jumoke Adebimpe ’96 and Tom Worrall ’87, along with Board of Trustee emerita and past parent Susie Wean and Alumni Association President Eben Adams ’89. Also present were former faculty member Miles Charest, teacher of French and Russian from 1964 to 1974, and current faculty and English department member Buddy Hendershot. San Francisco Alumni Reception - Feb. 25, 2010

The views of the Golden Gate Bridge were spectacular from the San Francisco home of Wendy and Fred ’59 Parkin who graciously hosted a Shady Side Academy alumni reception on the evening of Thursday, February 25, 2010.  More than 25 alumni, including several Board of Visitor members, attended to reconnect with fellow SSA alums and reengage with their alma mater.  President Tom Southard addressed the crowd on current and future updates of the Academy and captured the essence of being an SSA alum. New York City Alumni Reception – Jan. 25, 2010

On January 25, 2010, more than 50 alumni gathered at The Michelangelo Hotel in midtown Manhattan to reconnect with each other and with SSA.  Development Chair of the Board of Trustees Mary Ellen Costa and her husband Dr. Frank Costa were gracious enough to host the event and Academy President Tom Southard addressed the crowd on the latest from campus.  View a slideshow from the New York City event.
