Shady Side Home

Welcome from the admissions team at Shady Side Academy. We are delighted that you are interested in our school. This web site provides information to help you learn about the tremendous experience we offer students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12. While there is much to explore, we would like to highlight that Shady Side Academy is a learning community comprised of experienced and caring teachers whose highest priority is the responsible development of students' minds and character. Here, teachers and students engage daily in academic discovery and debate. Students are encouraged to take risks and build confidence through a variety of choices in the arts and athletics. Global and local service projects and travel opportunities further enhance the experience and help to widen our students' view of the world. We are a school rich in diversity, which embraces and welcomes differences in gender, race, religion, ethnicity, culture, and socioeconomic status.

If this sounds like a school you want to explore further, we invite you to come for a visit and tour. In this section of the web site, we have tried to anticipate your questions about the admissions process. Please be in touch if you need further information.

When is the admission cycle?

The Shady Side Academy admission cycle generally runs from September through January each year. We encourage prospective students and parents to contact us early in the fall to schedule a campus tour and begin to meet members of our community.

What kind of students does Shady Side Academy admit?

We seek students who are interested in becoming responsible members of the Academy community, enjoy learning and being involved in school life, and take their academic studies seriously. The Academy is able to pursue a selective admission process due to limited space within the student body; each year we have more applicants than spaces available.

How are students evaluated for admission?

Admission to Shady Side Academy is granted without preference to race, gender, color, religion, national or ethnic origin. The Academy actively seeks economic, social, racial and religious diversity in creating its student body. Dependent upon grade level, candidates for admission are evaluated on the following:

The application

Previous school records, when applicable

Personal interviews

The school visit

Reference(s)

Breadth and depth of interests and talents

Performance on the readiness activities or entrance examinations
