Overview |
| The hard-boiled detective: hero or heel? Loner or loser? In reading the works of such authors as Hammett, Block, Grafton, and Parker, the class will examine the development of the mystery novel generally and the hard-boiled detective novel specifically. Students will be asked to consider the place of the hard-boiled detective in the mystery genre and to examine the relationship of the detective to the society in which this character has developed and evolved. |

Parker "A" is for Alibi by Sue Grafton Recommended Reading List The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie One for the Money by Janet Evanovich The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith This Dame for Hire by Sandra Scoppettone I, the Jury by Mickey Spillane Writing assignments will include: Journal entries to include reactions to readings, movies, class discussions, etc. A character sketch at the end of each novel in the journal. (1-2 pages) Two (2) papers (approximately 5 pages each) A final exam |
