Overview

•  Review of previous grammar and syntax

•  Petronius ' The Millionaire's Dinner Party ; social customs of the Romans; video Quo Vadis ?

•  Life in the Urbs Antiqua , including readings on city planning, the great fire of AD 64, daily life, amusements, gladiators; video Spartacus

•  Selections from Ovid 's Metamorphoses , introduction to Augustan Age history and literature; introduction to mechanics of poetry and rhetorical figures

•  Apuleius ' Cupid and Psyche

•  Additional intermediate vocabulary

We will be doing extensive reading this year, beginning with The Millionaire's Dinner Party , an excerpt from Petronius' Satyricon . This unit will include grammar review. We will then do selections from various authors concerning life in the ancient city, move through some of Ovid 's poetry from the Metamorphoses , and end with Apuleius ' allegorical fairy tale Cupid and Psyche . This class will study the mechanics of rhetoric and poetry, including figures of speech and meter. Occasional units on culture or etymology may be included. Tests are given every three to four weeks, vocabulary quizzes bi-weekly. Homework (@ 30-40 minutes per night) will be checked regularly, at the teacher's discretion.

You will need: texts, notebook (w/pocket or ring binder), writing utensils, paper, lesson planner, Barron's Card Guide to Latin Grammar, highlighter
