Welcome to Statistics class with Mr. Tony! My expectations of you:
What you can expect from me:
Grading Procedures : At the end of each term, letter grades will be assigned based on the rubric on page 4 of your student handbook. Read it carefully. There is no scale for converting numerical grades into letter grades . Numerical marks are used only to help me assess content mastery on individual tests or quizzes. They play a role in determining the letter grade, but they are far from the only factor taken into consideration for letter grades. Other factors include relating knowledge to new situations and other disciplines, solving problems creatively, taking the initiative in class and showing continuous progress. Daily Participation is graded on a scale of 0 -5. In order to earn a 5 for the day, you must come to class prepared with your own workbook, calculator and completed homework assignment . You must also contribute to class discussion to earn a 5 for that day. A zero may be earned by coming to class unprepared (i.e. without your book and/or homework.) These scores will be used in determining both effort and letter grades at the end of the term. An unexcused absence from class will result in a daily participation grade of 0. An excused absence from class will result in no recorded participation grade for that day. Quizzes and tests are graded on a point system. Mathematical process and sound statistical thinking is emphasized over just getting the right answer. Correct answers without supporting work will not receive full credit. Incorrect answers with correct supporting work will receive partial credit commensurate with the amount and quality of supporting work. Missed tests are to be made up as soon as possible. Group projects are completed at the end of each term. The intent of term projects is for students to use the statistical concepts of the current term to attack problems of interest to them. Each term will emphasize different units of the course. Specifically, term one focuses on descriptive statistics , term two focuses on creating confidence intervals for a parameter and the term 3 project must include a hypothesis test . Projects are to be completed in groups of 1 or 2 students. A proposal will be collected and OKed before the start of the project. Assessment guidelines will be discussed in class before the projects are due. Computer labwork will be done once per cycle. You will report directly to the computer lab on Day 4 Period 4 for a 50-minute session using either Microsoft Excel or Fathom (a statistics software package.) You are expected to be at the lab on time and prepared just as with any other class meeting. You must have a working username and password. Occasionally homework will be assigned and collected using the school's computer network. To submit this homework, you are to send an email to rtony@shadysideacademy.org and attach the appropriate files. The same level of academic integrity will be upheld for computer work as for written work. Course Options : Students may elect to take this course in 3 different ways. 1) Students may choose to register (for a fee) for college credit in the College in High School program through the University of Pittsburgh . Students will receive University credit that may be transferable to their college of choice. We have a list of colleges that have historically accepted or rejected this Pitt credit. These students are entitled to a Pitt ID card, use of University libraries and possibly athletic tickets at student rates. 2) Students may choose to register (for a fee) for the Advanced Placement exam in Statistics. Our course covers a majority of the material on this exam. However, students electing to take the AP exam must complete significant work outside of this class to cover the entire AP syllabus . 3) Students may decline to register for Pitt credit or for the AP exam and take this course as a stand-alone SSA course (no fee charged). |
