Linear Algebra: Mr. Tony

Overview

We cover the basics of linear systems.

Syllabus

Welcome to math class with Mr. Tony!

My expectations of you:

  • To come to class on time and prepared
  • To read each section in the textbook as we cover it
  • To make a serious effort on each and every homework problem each night
  • To be attentive in class, taking notes and asking questions as needed
  • To have your own working calculator for tests and quizzes
  • To come in for extra help when you need it
  • To respect the questions and opinions of your classmates and your teacher
  • To listen to and include each member during group activities.

What you can expect from me:

  • To come to class on time and prepared
  • To be available for extra help whenever possible
  • To respect your opinions and to answer your questions to the best of my ability
  • To regularly check homework for effort
  • To grade papers in a fair and clearly defined way
  • To return graded papers in a timely fashion and with meaningful remarks
  • To give you fair warning (at least 3 days) before a test is given
  • To help you prepare for the final exam with sufficient review time and materials
  • To be available after quizzes, tests and exams to discuss mathematical errors, questions and successes
  • To make my grading procedures clearly understood (see below)
  • To tell at least one, probably non-funny, joke this year.

Grading Procedures:

At the end of each term, letter grades will be assigned based on the rubric on page 4 of your student handbook. Read it carefully. There is no scale for converting numerical grades into letter grades . Numerical marks are used only to help me assess content mastery on individual tests or quizzes. They play a role in determining the letter grade, but they are far from the only factor taken into consideration for letter grades. Other factors include relating knowledge to new situations and other disciplines, solving problems creatively, taking the initiative in class and showing continuous progress.

Homework is graded for effort only. The marks are -, P -, or P + based on the proportion of problems that were given sufficient effort. It will be checked at the beginning of class. There is no opportunity to resubmit incomplete homework except in the case of an excused absence.

Quizzes and tests are graded on a point system. Mathematical process is emphasized over just getting the right answer. Correct answers without supporting work will not receive full credit. Incorrect answers with correct supporting work will receive partial credit commensurate with the amount and quality of supporting work. Missed tests are to be made up as soon as possible.

Assignments

The first test is Tuesday September 28th on Chapter 1.
