Music Theory is offered to all SSA students with no prerequisites necessary. It is a classroom elective and earns three credits toward graduation. The course content is based on a college first year theory class with concepts age appropriate to high school students. Music Theory is a discipline predicated upon an intellectual understanding of how music is put together. Music is organized sound. In Theory we examine the creative process, and how decisions are made to achieve the desired communication of emotional content in a composition. Course content includes fundamentals of sound, notation, harmony, melody, rhythm, meter, analysis, voice leading, ear training, historical context, and formal structures. By the end of the course a student should feel comfortable discussing an opening movement from a Beethoven sonata in terms of all of those concepts. In addition, there discussions about music from pop culture, and 20 th century compositions.
Grading Policy. Students will be evaluated by their progress on nightly homework, quizzes, tests, and projects. There will be a minimum of three major evaluations per term, along with intermittent quizzes. Daily participation discussing homework assignments and new material is critical in determining the final grade and effort grades. A student must complete a minimum of 70% of the homework assignments to pass the class (in conjunction with results of other evaluations).
