Grade 6: Western Civilization

•  A thematic investigation and chronological survey of Western Civilization from the ancient Middle East to World War II

•  Investigate change , continuity, and resistance to change in cultures, governments, economic systems and social processes in different eras

•  Explore the relationship between geography and human behavior

•  Develop critical reading skills such as main ideas, frame of reference, fact and opinion, and bias

•  Foster writing skills and research skills through essay writing and collaborative projects with the students and across disciplines

•  Cultivate an information base in history and social sciences to recognize relevant connections between the past and present

Syllabus

• Develop historical and social science knowledge using inquiry, critical thinking, decision making and interpersonal skills
• Cultivate an appreciation for differences in cultures, periods of time, continuity and change
• Explore the concepts and practices of civic virtues and citizen responsibility
• Develop reading, writing, organizational, analytical skills and historical habits of the mind
• Augment mastery of paragraph development, essay construction and research skills

Social Studies Grade Six

Final Exam Announcement

The sixth grade social studies classes will have a final exam this year and the following will be a summary of the characteristics of the exam.

The content of the exam will cover the last five units from the Renaissance to the Russian Revolution.

This is approximately half of the year.

An oral review will be given two days before the exam

The students received a final exam review sheet on the first week of May, 2007.

The exam will be objective consisting of multiple choice, true and false, and matching questions, and the exam will be worth ten percent of the year average
