  A. Sample Terms:

    * physical, mental/emotional, and social health, wellness, adolescence,

puberty, endocrine system, primary sex characteristics, lifestyle factors,

    risk behavior, cumulative risk, consequence, values

II. Decision Making

  A. Sample Terms

    * decision, steps to the decision making process

III. Cost of Drugs to Society

  A. Sample Concepts

    * examine the impact of the drug problem on the costs incurred by various

aspects of our society; law enforcement, family, employers, judicial

costs

IV. Cost of Drugs to the Family

  A. Sample Concepts

    * examine the impact drug abuse/addiction has on the dynamics of family

life for the user and non-user; denial, rationalization, hitting ‘rock

bottom' etc.

V. Addiction and the Nervous System

  A. Sample Concepts

* examine the intensity and nature of addiction; how do neurons

communicate? what is the basic mechanism for how a drug impacts the

nervous system?

VI. Alcohol

  A. Sample Concepts

* categories of psychoactive drugs; what does a ‘depressant' do?

oxidation, detoxification, binge drinking, BAC/BAL, gender issues with

alcohol use

VII. Other Chemicals of Concern

•  Sample Concepts

* relevant facts and myths about various drugs impacting teens today

VIII. Nutrition

  A. Sample Terms

    * energy balance, food & nutrient groups, portion, frequency, nutrient

density, types of carbohydrates and fats, amino acids

GRADING:

•  Quizzes – announced and open book/open notebook – These quizzes may be harder than you think!

•  Homework assignments – You don't get too many…produce work of the highest quality!!

•  Notebook checks – Write down what you see and what you think is important…you will need really good notes on an open notebook quiz, right?!

•  Other possible project(s) may be in your future too…we'll see.
