     SIXTH GRADE HEALTH COURSE OUTLINE

I. Introductory, Basic Concepts in Health

  A. Sample Terms:

    * physical, mental/emotional, and social health, wellness, adolescence,

puberty, endocrine system, lifestyle factors, risk behavior, cumulative

risk, consequence, self-control

II. Decision Making

  A. Sample Terms

    * decision, steps to the decision making process

III. Nutrition

  A. Sample Concepts and Terms

    * what is a calorie? what are nutrients and food groups? energy balance,

portion, frequency, nutrient density, empty calories

  B. Sample Question of Inquiry

    * if there is no fat in soda, then why/how can a person gain weight from

drinking it?

IV. The Organization of the Body

  A. Sample /Concepts and Terms

    * the organizational flow of how a body is put together ( atom, cell etc.),

    system identification and system components, cell types and basic cell

anatomy

V. Skeletal System

  A. Sample Concepts

    * anatomy and function of the skeletal system, connective tissue, bone

identification

VI. Muscular System

  A. Sample Concepts

    * types of muscle tissue, function and location; how are muscle groups

arranged? how do they work? skeletal muscle group identification

VII. Respiratory System

  A. Sample Concepts

* anatomy of the respiratory system, how does oxygen get into the blood?

where does it enter?

VIII. Tobacco

  A. Sample Concepts

    * identify the names of the 3 predominant substances in cigarette smoke

and how they affect the body, what are the health risks associated with

smoking?

GRADING:

•  Quizzes – announced and open book/open notebook – These quizzes may be harder than you think!

•  Homework assignments – You don't get too many…produce work of the highest quality!!

•  Notebook checks – Write down what you see and what you think is important…you will need really good notes on an open notebook quiz, right?!

•  Other possible project(s) may be in your future too…we'll see.

ASSIGNMENTS

Students in both of my 6th grade sections will be getting a quiz about basic cell types, organization of the body, and notes about the skeletal system very soon; section 1 on Wednesday, 12/10, and section 2 on either Friday 12/12 or Monday 12/15

 

Announcements

1.) All quizzes this year will be given in the open-notebook, open-book format. However, it is still very important that all relevant materials be reviewed prior to each quiz so the content of the material is well understood beforehand.
