Instrumental Music: Ms. Modic

Overview

The Instrumental Music program at the Junior School involves wind and percussion instruments.  Wind instruments include recorder, flute, oboe, clarinet, alto saxophone, trumpet, french horn, and trombone.  Percussion instruments include snare and bass drum, auxiliary percussion instruments, and marimba.  Students choose, in fourth grade, an instrument that they want to study for the next two years at the Junior School and will then begin private lessons with Ms. Modic.  After all students have had their private lessons, they will be grouped by "like" instruments for weekly lessons. Additionally, all students have one weekly large group rehearsal (fourth grade will not begin large group rehearsals until mid-January).

When in fifth grade, students are given the opportunity to try a new member of their instrument's family.  For example, a fifth grade flute student can try the piccolo for a few weeks, a fifth grade clarinet student can try the bass clarinet, a fifth grade alto sax student can try the soprano sax and tenor sax, and fifth grade trumpet players can try the flugelhorn and baritone horn.

Mystery Musician for December:

  1.  This Russian musician/composer first became a law clerk because his father thought a career in music was not acceptable.

2.  He liked playing cards.  Solitaire was his favorite game.

3.  A certain ballet and suite of music (that is popular during the winter holidays) that he composed has gotten more people interested in listening to classical music than any other piece of music!

4.  He wrote 1812 Overture. It requires cannons to fire during the piece and is often perfomed to celebrate the fourth of July.

Mystery Musician for November:

Stevie Wonder!
