Overview

Welcome to the Junior School Library!  The library serves the reading and information needs of all students.  All grades have scheduled library time.  Library classes consist of a combination of Story Time, library-related lessons and activities, and most importantly, borrowing.

LIBRARY ACTIVITIES

The library is open every morning at 7:30 for the 'Before School' program supervised by Mary Aiken.  At 8:00, the library continues to welcome students to spend time before the start of the school day.  Some grade levels spend some time each morning before bell readying themselves for the day's activities.  This means these grades - kindergarten, first grade, and third grade - might need to leave the library at 8:15.   The rest of the students are welcome to stay to read, play board or card games, color or draw, or use the library's electronic resources.  Students in grades four and five may also use this time to borrow books.

Book Fair

The annual Junior School Book Fair will be held the week of November 11th. This week all students will have a preview and purchase day to browse and then buy quality titles ordered from local bookseller, Joseph-Beth.  The book fair promotes literacy through the hundreds of specially selected titles.  The profit is used to purchase additional books and special items for the library.

A permission slip has been sent home in the Friday folders.  The permission slip includes a dollar amount allowed for your child to spend and special permission for admittance to the special gift area.  In addition, this year the library is offering the opportunity for students to buy a book for our neighbor, the Wilkinsburg Public Library.  For a copy of your child's schedule and the permission slip, click:

Readers of the Lost Art

Fourth grade had its first Book Club meeting for the book, Hoot, by Carl Hiaasen.  The discussion was lively and the snack was sweet!

Fourth grade has already chosen its next book:

Iqbal, by Francesco D'Adamo.

The fifth grade book club has decided to read the first book in a variety of quality series.  The winner of the book voting for our first meeting was:

Blood Red Horse by K.M. Grant

Fifth grade will meet Thursday, October 30th.

NEW BOOK DONATION PROGRAM!

Donating a book to the Junior School Library is a Shady Side Academy tradition.  Families purchase a book during the month of the student's birthday to celebrate with the school.  Typically print lists of possible donations are mailed but this year the tradition has gone electronic by changing the process for donating a book.  Simply click on the button below to access the library wishlist at Amazon.com.   You will find a sampling of books for all ages.  The books may be purchased and will automatically be mailed to the library.  The donation will be noted in the Parent Newsletter, on this teacher page, and a bookplate with the child's name will be placed inside the book.  The birthday child gets first borrowing privileges of course!  To help us with this project, please include the child's name in your Amazon processing.  If you are unable to access Amazon, just contact the library for other ways to donate to our library.  Click the button below to give the gift you can open again and again - a book.
