| Fifth Grade: Mrs. Suhody |
OVERVIEW Students do a great deal of reading and writing in fifth grade language arts. The in-class (literature workshop) novels include: The Islander (Rylant); Baby (MacLachlan); Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry (Taylor); The Devil's Arithmetic (Yolen); Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes (Coerr); and Seedfolks (Fleischman). They identify and discuss literary elements, including theme, and they learn to summarize succinctly. Students also participate in reader's theater periodically throughout the year, which helps to build fluency. They hone their dictionary skills and identify new words as they read, as well as learn a new vocabulary word (and its part of speech) every day. They sharpen their literal, evaluative, and inferential reading skills through the written exploration of questions. Finally, they discuss literature. Students receive instruction in the mechanics of writing and receive many writing assignments througout the year, including poetry, descriptive narratives, research reports, expository paragraphs, and persuasive writing. They review, practice, and learn grammar, usage, and mechanics daily using handouts from the Elements of Grammar program. They review, practice, and learn phonetic code and spelling rules using the Zaner-Bloser Spelling Connections workbooks. Spelling homework is given throughout the week.
