K-Grade 2 - Science: Mrs. Janosko

Overview

Science is an exciting and learning experience here at Shady Side Junior School!

Our kindergartners visit the science lab once a week. We recently held a Sense Scavenger Hunt in our William Foster Garden to begin the sense unit. Soon the students will be  investigating braille as they make their individual braille greeting cards. Each sense will be explored through a myriad of activities including dyeing tongues which highlights the taste buds, smelling mystery containers to match the foods they eat and creating their individual touch books.

Fall is upon us and , with the dropping temperatures, our first graders are learning to read thermometers. By using our inter-active SmartBoard, first graders are quickly learning to read thermometers. They take great delight in reading the temperature of ice water and reading the temperature in the shade and sunny areas of  our campus. Soon Mr. Bill Sayles, a  former science teacher who visited the Antarctic for six months, will share his Antarctic adventures with us and the impact of temeperature.

As part of their seed unit, the second graders investigated seeds outdoors, including tree seeds. Now the second graders are in the midst of "adopting" a tree in the outdoors where they will observe the tree  as well as write and illustrate their observations during the fall, winter and spring months. These findings will be compiled into individual tree books. Their initial work will be on display in the science hall. Come and see!

A hissing cockroach is the newest addition to the classroom! In addition, our animal room boasts an iguana, chinchilla, turtles, guinea pigs and more. All this enables our  students to meet animal critters up close and personal!   In addition, our touch table gives the students an opportunity to be curious and use scientific manipulatives as well as touch natural specimens. We invite you to come and visit us!!

Announcement:

Our Pumpkin Corner! Our students now have a chance to use their math and imagination skills by guessing the pumpkin's weight. Guess the pumpkin weight! Hold five pounds of flour. Now hold the pumpkin. Does it weigh more or less? Guess the weight and write your answer. Deposit in the plastic pumpkin.
