Physical Education: Kim Disbrow and Daniel Stern

Overview:

The Physical Education program for grades Pre K-2 has unique, but not exclusive roles to play in the education of children. One role is to enhance a child's physical fitness and well being and another to teach him/her a variety of motor skills. Physical education, through its activities and experiences can and must contribute to the shared goals of education, such as enhancing self direction, self-esteem, and cooperative behavior. Finally physical education is a life long process of change and should be an enjoyable and satisfying experience for each and every child. The Physical Education program begins with movement skills for younger students and progresses to more sport specific skills in the later grades. Throughout the program; fitness, sportsmanship, cooperation and leadership are stressed.

The Physical Education curriculum in grades 3-5 is designed to have all students involved in a program of conditioning, athletic skill development and social skill development. In each sport/activity, the students are taught skills, concepts and rules of the game. Drills and small-sided games are then implemented, which progresses into full sided games. The games also give ample opportunities to further teach proper/improper skills, positioning, rules, and basic concepts of the game. The P.E. program gives the students the opportunities to compete in a variety of sports - learning sportsmanship and leadership, as well as learning team-building skills, sport-specific skills and strategies.

Clothing Requirements: Students in grades 3-5 are required to have Shady Side gym uniform at the start of the school year.  Previous years clothing is acceptable.  Clothing is available to purchase through the gym store.  The clothes will be sent home every other Friday to be washed.  Please make sure that your child's name is in all of their clothing.  Remember ink does wash out in the laundry!!!  Appropriate tennis shoes are required for every student every day.  Please see handbook for details.  Students in grades K-2 do not change clothes but are required to wear tennis shoes in school every day for both Physical Education classes as well as scheduled recess times.  Please note that slip on shoes are not acceptable.

Announcements :

COMING NEW TO THE JUNIOR SCHOOL GYMNASIUM                                                       FOR THE 2008-2009 SCHOOL YEAR:

XERGAMES SPORTWALL TRAINING STATIONS! (see images in photo gallery)

A two panel system will be installed in the Jr. School Gymnasium prior to the start of the 2008-2009 school year.

Active Interactive Technology - the Motivational Key:
Sportwall uses active interactive technology to engage interest, measure improvement, create excitement and motivate students to exercise. All curriculum provided conforms to NASPE standards. Best of all, students of all ages and abilities love it and keep coming back for more. Challenging, Yes! Exciting and rewarding? Definitely.

Sportwall Sensory Integration Training:
This training engages the use of the hands, feet, eyes, ears and vestibular system concurrently with cognitive decision making which results in skill based game-style activities. The level of efficiency called on is above and beyond their existing skill level and comfort zone, which forces the natural process of adaptation. By adapting to a higher level of performance the neurological system adjusts naturally by creating more efficient pathways in the brain. The result is increased balance, strength and flexibility with enhanced motor coordination, agility, speed and power.

Brain and Body Fitness:
Sportwall solutions are especially helpful for children who have difficulty with reading, motor planning, physical coordination, attention span, and body awareness. They gain core skills such as hand/eye coordination, concentration and balance. Sportwall Sensory Integration Training is fun, motivating and effective. Instead of avoiding activity, students will always ask for "one more turn on Sportwall."

Sportwall Makes Exercise Everyones Favorite Activity:
Sportwall has turned exercise into an activity everyone looks forward to, resulting in a positive attitude towards fitness, especially among the more inactive population. Some schools have even added voluntary sessions before and after school to accommodate the demand.

Healthy Eating Habits:

*A health meal plan should consist of three well balanced meals and two snacks.

*Eat at the table:  Avoid letting your child eat snacks or meals outside of the kitchen or dining room--never in front of the TV!

*Drinking Water:  Encourage children to drink at least 4-6 glasses of water per day.  This will keep them hydrated as well as make them feel full.

WATER OR COKE?
Eye Opening Information!
This is really an eye opener.... Water or
Coke? We all know that water is important but I've
never seen it written down like this before.
WATER
1. 75% of Americans are chronically
dehydrated.
2. In 37% of Americans, the thirst mechanism
is so weak that it is often mistaken for hunger.
3. Even MILD dehydration will slow down one's
metabolism as much as 3%.
4. One glass of water will shut down midnight
hunger pangs for almost 100% of the dieters studied
in a University of Washington study.
5. Lack of water, the #1 trigger of daytime
fatigue.
6. Preliminary research indicates that 8-10
glasses of water a day could significantly ease back
and joint pain for up to 80% of sufferers.
7. A mere 2% drop in body water can trigger
fuzzy short-term memory, trouble with basic math,
and difficulty focusing on the computer screen or on
a printed page.
8. Drinking 5 glasses of water daily decreases
the risk of colon cancer by 45%, plus it can slash
the risk of breast cancer by 79%, and one is 50%
less likely to develo p bladder cancer.

And now for the properties of Coke:
1. In many states (in the USA) the highway
patrol carries two gallons of Coke in the truck to
remove blood from the highway after a car accident.
2. You can put a T-bone steak in a bowl of
Coke and it will be gone in two days.
3. To clean a toilet: Pour a can of Coca-Cola
into the toilet bowl and let the "real thing" sit
for one hour, then flush clean. The citric acid in
Coke removes stains from vitreous China.
4. To remove rust spots from chrome car
bumpers: Rub the bumper with a rumpled-up piece of
Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil dipped in Coca-Cola.
5. To clean corrosion from car battery
terminals: Pour a can of Coca-Cola over the
terminals to bubble away the corrosion
6. To loosen a rusted bolt: Applying a cloth
soaked in Coca-Cola to the rusted bolt for several
minutes.
7. To bake a moist ham: Empty a can of
Coca-Cola into the baking pan, wrap the ham in
aluminum foil, and bake. Thirty minutes before the
ham is finished, remove the foil, allowing the
drippings to mix with the Coke for sumptuous brown
gravy.
8. To remove grease from clothes: Empty a can
of Coke into a load of greasy clothes, add
detergent, and run through a regular cycle. The
Coca-Cola will help loosen grease stains.
9. It will also clean road haze from your
windshield.
For Your Info:
1. The active ingredient in Coke is phosphoric
acid. Its pH is 2.8. It will dissolve a nail in
about 4 days.
Phosphoric acid also leaches calcium from
bones and is a major contributor to the rising
increase in osteoporosis.
2. To carry Coca-Cola syrup (the concentrate)
the commercial truck must use the Hazardous material
place cards reserved for highly corrosive materials.
3. The distributors of Coke have been using it
to clean the engines of their trucks for
about 20 years!
Now the question is...
Would you like a Coke or a glass of water?
