Overview

In Kindergarten we are working on developing the whole child.  We want all children in our class to develop socially, emotionally and academically.  We have created a center-oriented classroom that will help to enhance a child-centered curriculum.  Our focus is to develop a path for each child and not the child for the path.  We are continuing to work hard to keep everything developmentally appropriate.  We embrace the early childhood philosophy of: creating a caring community of learners, teaching to enhance children's learning and development, constructing appropriate curriculum, assessing children's learning and development, and establishing reciprocal relationships with families.

Shady Side Academy News

Your child has recently become a member of a "Tuesday Team."  All members of the Junior School were randomly placed on a team that will meet once a month after our Tuesday assembly.  These teams will give our students a chance to work with children and teachers of all grades as well as support staff throughout the building.  In our first meeting, each team worked together to decide on a name for their team.  On October 14th, we each brought our favorite stuffed animal to assembly.  We shared its name, where we got the animal from, and why it is special to us.  Plans for December 2nd include bringing a picture of the family celebrating an important holiday.

On Friday, October 10th we gathered at the Senior School to create a monumental picture.  Every person involved in the activity received a white T-shirt that had the new Shady Side seal on the front and on the back it read, I am history in the making.  Take a look and see history in the making.  Kindergarten is in the front two rows of the number 2.

Collecting pennies

The entire Jr. School has begun collecting pennies to buy a birthday gift for the Jr. School. From now till February 13th, we will be collecting pennies. On February 13th, we will have a birthday party to celebrate the 100th day of the 100th year of the Jr. School.

For a weekly math lesson, we will be estimating how many pennies we have collected for each week, count by tens and then find a total for the week. We talked to the students that we do not expect them to bring in tons of pennies each week. They could earn the pennies or make some exchanges with other coins. Please do not feel that you need to send in a large amount of pennies each week. This activity will be going on for several months.

First week's total are140 pennies! -- November 7th

Second week's total are 244 pennies! -- November 13th

Third week's total are 341 pennies! -- November 21st

Monthly Update

Welcome friends, we are off to a great start in kindergarten.  We have been busily getting to know each other and establishing rules and routines.  The children have been doing a great job meeting all their new teachers and learning about their school.

The children have been coming into the classroom each morning and enjoying a variety of free choice activities.  We then begin our day with a morning meeting where we greet our friends, learn about our daily schedule and explore a variety of math concepts through our calendar.

In Social Studies we have been getting to know our friends in both classes through various integrated whole group activities. This month, as a way to continue to get to know each other we are learning about our families.  Each student brought in a family picture and discussed who each member was in the family.  We then looked at similiarities and differences of our families.  We then created a family shield.  The family shield included illustrations of their family, things they like to do with their family, how I help my family, and favorite family celebrations.   These family shields will be displayed in our hallway very soon!

Get ready for a fun and exciting school year!  We look forward to working closely with you and your child.

Please continue to regularly check our kindergarten web page for monthly updates of class activities.
