Overview

Publishing Center:

Publishing is an extension of the writing program for first and second grade.  Students in these grades write stories during writing time in the classroom, and bring them to the publishing office.  Students will work with Mr. Stern to edit, revise, rewrite, and finally publish.  Students are able to illustrate and take home a "published" bound book of their own story. 

Writing Workshop:

Both Second and Third Grade classrooms will be participating in a weekly writing workshop with Mr. Stern.  Students will learn each step of the writing process: drafting, editing, revising, rewriting, typing, publishing.  Each writing project will be published into a final published portfolio.  The Workshops will focus on creative writing, while the students will be exposed to many different genres and styles of writing.  Students will be expected to work through each step in the writing process, as well as, peer-edit at times with their classmates.

Topics Included:

Sentence Building, Paragraph Building, Topic Sentence, Supporting Sentence, Story Building(Intro, Body, Conclusion) Narrative Short Stories, Free-Write, Teacher instructed Prompts, Descriptive vs. Non-Descriptive Styles, Poetry (acrostic, haiku, non-rhyming, couplets, cinquain, end-rhyme, monthly theme poems) etc.
