| First Grade: Mrs. Hendershot |
Overview: The Language Arts program in first grade has a variety of components to meet the wide range of abilities at this level. Children and literature are the core of this program, which is integrated into all other subject areas. Reading, handwriting, speaking, listening spelling, written expression and grammar are all interrelated. Each serves to reinforce and enhance the others. Most of the Social Studies Program is integrated with the thematic units of study. Students learn the importance of community, friendship, family, geography, beginning map skills, oceans and continents, environmental responsibilities, famous and not so famous people, explorers, and the world around them. Current events are discussed when they are appropriate. They learn the aspects of being good citizens by practicing everyday at school. The first grade mathematics is a combined curriculum from Everyday Mathematics and the Terc Series . Recognition and understanding how numbers are used in our everyday experiences are an essential part of math in first grade. Problem solving, hands on activities, sharing ideas, discussion, partner and small group learning, games connecting experiences with concepts, daily routines, and on going review are all parts of the mathematics that are featured in first grade. Math is integrated into all areas of the curriculum. Often children do not realize they are doing "math." The concepts and content are also reinforced through additional activities usually involving manipulatives and literature that are appropriate for first grade. Thematic units include: ladybugs, pumpkins, bees, bats, friendship, apples, celebrations, family, Polar Regions, pigs, owls, Pond Life, Australia |
