Second Grade: Lisa Anselmo and Mary Modoono

Welcome to Second Grade!  This year we will study about the Rain Forest, Africa and  the Desert, Timelines, the Amish, Pittsburgh, Fairy Tales and Pirates in Integrated Units. Students will also be busy learning in Monthly Centers and Math Centers.   We will be reading many books to the children by authors like Lionni, Henkes, Van Allsburg, Steig, De Paola, and Pallocco.  The children will read to us and work on building their comprehension skills with various chapter books.  In Writing, we will strive to use complete sentences, with proper punctuation, interesting action words and  descriptive adjectives.  In Math, we will begin the year with a focus on patterns and addition and subtraction.  Soon after, we will move onto studying time, calendar,  and addition and subtraction with regrouping.  These studies will be followed by the study of fractions, geometry, measurement, graphing, estimation and multiplication.  There will be ten Spelling words and one or two "Must Know Words" assigned weekly.  We will also begin to practice writing in cursive.   Second Grade is a busy, busy year!!
