SSA Offers Youth Skating & Hockey Lessons to the Public

Shady Side Academy is offering Learn to Skate and Learn to Play Hockey lessons again this fall for boys and girls ages 3 and older. The lessons are open to the public and will be held Mondays from 6:15-7:15 p.m. in McKnight Hockey Center on the SSA Senior School campus, 423 Fox Chapel Road, Fox Chapel. Classes run from Sept. 18 to Oct. 23, with no class on Oct. 9. The cost is $150 for all five lessons.

SSA boys' prep ice hockey Head Coach Jonathan Johnson will coordinate the on-ice sessions, with help from Assistant Coach Stu Smith and the SSA ice hockey players. The classes include 30 minutes of group instruction and 30 minutes of open practice time. Students will be divided into three groups according to ability.

Learn to Skate classes are for beginners who want to learn the basics of ice skating. Learn to Play Hockey classes are for those who have already taken skating lessons and want to begin learning the basics of playing ice hockey.

All students must supply their own skates, and helmets are mandatory. Learn to Skate students may wear bicycle-type helmets, and should also wear gloves and snow pants. Learn to Play Hockey students must have a hockey helmet with full face mask, elbow pads, shin pads and hockey gloves to participate; full hockey gear is recommended.

Download the program flyer to register. Space is limited and classes are expected to sell out, so register early!
