Senior School "Cabaret de Chiapas" Event Raises $540

On Friday, Jan. 6, students in the Shady Side Academy Senior School Chiapas Club hosted the "Cabaret de Chiapas" event, raising $540 to support children in Mexico.

The cabaret show, which took place in the Hillman Center's black box theater, featured performances by several SSA students, including senior Felicia Reuter and juniors Felicia Devorris, Chester Todd, Emily Weiss, Antoni Yotov and Julia Zoratto. History teacher Matt Weiss and English teacher Buddy Hendershot also performed, as did alumnus Kyle O'Connor '16. The performances included singing, guitar playing, piano sonatas, acting monologues, and even a Spanish poem written by Mr. Hendershot.

The $540 dollars raised from this event will be donated to the community in Chiapas, Mexico, which the club has supported for 21 years. The funds raised by the club support the education of a group of students in Chiapas, one of which has gone on to start his own computer company. The club helps to pay for supplies, facilities and general funds. The Chiapas Club was founded by SSA world languages teacher Dr. Carol-Jean McGreevy-Morales, who spoke about the Chiapas community at the event.

"Education is a right to us, something we don't have to think about getting, but for them it's a privilege," said Zoratto, one of the student organizers. "The point of this Cabaret was to both raise money and raise awareness for Chiapas. Many in the community don't know exactly what Chiapas is or how to get involved. We attempted to bring together the arts community with Chiapas for the rest of the SSA community and it went quite well."

Congratulations!
