Senior Receives Rotary Club Student of Distinction Award

Caroline Benec Receives Rotary Club Student of Distinction AwardThe Rotary Club of Pittsburgh honored Shady Side Academy senior Caroline Benec as its Student of Distinction for January 2017 at the club's luncheon on Jan. 18 at the Omni William Penn Hotel. Benec was recognized for her efforts to contribute to her community in ways that reflect the Rotary Club's motto of "Service Above Self". She was accompanied by SSA Associate Director of College Counseling Julie Hertz.

A leader in the classroom and on the athletic field, Benec has a passion for serving others. At SSA, she is a longtime member of the Diversity Leadership Council, working to make the school community a more understanding, compassionate and inclusive environment. Outside of school, she volunteers at the Deer Valley YMCA Family Camp, helps children at the Women's Center and Shelter of Greater Pittsburgh, and teaches CCD at St. Bede Parish.

In her introduction of Benec at the luncheon, Hertz said: "Caroline is a young person of uncommon character, grace and strong values. Not swayed by the voices of others, Caroline is level and balanced, a loyal friend and a student respected by all in our community ... Caroline is constantly thinking of those around her, and motivating others to be as selfless as she is."

Senior School math teacher Sue Whitney, who nominated Benec for the award, noted that she inspires legions of students and faculty alike with her calm yet determined nature, her inclusive spirit towards all who interact with her, and her commitment to always giving her best whether it be in the classroom, the athletic field or in the hallways.

The mission of the Rotary Club of Pittsburgh is to ensure that every young person in the city has an opportunity to succeed. The criteria for the Student of Distinction Award are:
