Nine Seniors Honored by Fox Chapel Rotary Club

Fox Chapel Rotary Club Honorees 2017The Rotary Club of Fox Chapel Area honored nine Shady Side Academy seniors at a luncheon on Wednesday, May 10, at the Pittsburgh Field Club.

The students, who were chosen by the Senior School's academic departments, were honored for outstanding academic achievement and for embodying the Rotarian ideals of good citizenship and service to others.

Each senior was given a certificate, a monetary award and the opportunity to address the Rotarians about their future plans. Bill McConnel, the Rotary Club's Youth Committee Chair, presented the awards to each student.

"It's a highlight of our year," said Al Hribar, Rotary president. "Honoring these young men and women underscores the principals that Rotary stands for. We are so fortunate to have such fine schools in our community that consistently graduate such bright, talented and principled students."

Kyle Smith, chair of the Senior School History Department, described the students as "true scholar-citizens" who had a "relentless curiosity across a wide range of academic and extracurricular interests."

Those students honored were:

  • Kerry Broker, representing performing arts
  • Alexa Conomikes, representing math
  • Annika Dhawan, representing world languages
  • Ian Holland, representing history
  • Kay Hughes, representing visual arts
  • Ryan Labriola, representing computer science
  • AnnaElanie Rosengart, representing music
  • Anya Satyawadi, representing English
  • Tom Scherlis, representing science
