Middle Schoolers Place Second in National Science League Contest

National Science League logoSeventh grade science students at Shady Side Academy Middle School placed second in the nation on the 2017-2018 National Science League's (NSL) Life Science Contest.

Each year, SSA Middle School students participate in the NSL contest. Sixth graders compete in the General Science Contest, seventh graders in the Life Science Contest and eighth graders in the Physical Science Contest. Each contest consists of an exam with 40-50 questions, and students have 35 minutes to complete it. The school sends the scores of the top 10 students in each grade to the national competition, and their combined scores determine the overall place for each grade.

The following are the top 10 highest-scoring seventh grade students whose combined scores earned SSA a second-place national finish:

  1. Jack Hathaway
  2. Prayag Vemulapalli
  3. Andy Marous
  4. Rosie Blodgett
  5. Braden Crow
  6. Emily Jordan
  7. Ariya Tayal
  8. Jeffrey Patterson
  9. Megan Dollard
  10. Lars Barkman

The National Science League is part of the Continental Mathematics League program, founded in 1980 for public and private schools.

Congratulations to all of the students for their outstanding achievement in science!
