Middle School Community Service Efforts Make an Impact

This fall, the Shady Side Academy Middle School Community Service Committee has spearheaded several successful efforts to help those in need.

In September, a dress-down day and bake sale were held to raise money for the victims of the hurricanes that swept across the U.S., and a total of $1,325 was collected from students and faculty. The funds were donated to Brother's Brother Foundation to support their hurricane relief efforts.

For Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October, the school raised $672 from students and faculty through a dress-down day and a candy guessing game. The funds were donated to the University of Pittsburgh for breast cancer research.

In November, the Middle School held its annual Thanksgiving Food Drive to benefit Heritage Community Initiatives in Braddock. A total of 431 Thanksgiving food items, plus 20 Giant Eagle gift cards, were donated by students and faculty. Each year, Heritage provides a full Thanksgiving meal, including a gift card to buy a turkey, to nearly 150 needy families.

Finally, the school sponsored a winter outerwear drive in late November to benefit North Hills Community Outreach. Families donated a total of 25 coats, 21 scarves, 30 hats and nine pairs of gloves to help our neighbors in need.

Thanks to the students on the Community Service Committee and to faculty advisors Paul and Leslie Bodnarchuk and Kelli Wood, for organizing all of these worthy service efforts! And thanks to all of the families who supported them.
