Accidental Activists Documentary Screening at the Hillman May 8

Accidental ActivistsThe Shady Side Academy Senior School Gay-Straight Alliance presents the premiere screening of the documentary Accidental Activists: One Couple's Journey to the Supreme Court on Monday, May 8, at 7 p.m. in the Hillman Center for Performing Arts, located on the SSA Senior School campus, 423 Fox Chapel Road, Fox Chapel. The event is free and open to the public, and includes a Q&A with Emmy Award-winning director Mandi Wright afterward.

Accidental Activists traces the five-year journey of Jayne Rowse and April DeBoer, two lesbians who had been together for years and raised three special-needs children together. They wanted to be legally recognized as a family, but couldn't because Michigan's adoption code would not let them jointly adopt the children. They filed a lawsuit in federal court seeking to overturn the adoption law, but on the recommendation of the federal judge, decided to argue against the legal barrier that prevented them from jointly adopting — Michigan's constitutional amendment prohibiting same-sex marriage. The case, which Detroit Free Press photographer-videographer Wright followed from the outset, became a cog in the legal battle that resulted in the Supreme Court legalizing same-sex marriage across the country in June 2015.

Wright will also be visiting classes at SSA Senior School on Monday.
