Susan and Paul Claus, colonial artisans, visited the third grade and pre-school. This visit ties into the third grade's unit on Colonial Times.
Susan demonstrated spinning, talked about clothing, footwear and textiles. She also demonstrated a mouse trap of the time period and showed a "toothbrush". The variety of household items were diverse and special. Susan also donated several skeins of hand spun wool she made to the knitting club!!!
Paul showed his leather craft which is known as "jackware". Leather was the "plastic" of colonial times. Buckets, cups, and containers were made of leather, then boiled to make them tough and hard. They did not break like pottery or china. He also brought a collection of animal pelts of woodland animals that would inhabit this part of the country.
Susan and Paul also visited the pre-school and told a couple of fairy tales that held the attention of the preschoolers he whole time!
